Masked Nudes (New York, USA, 2012)

In response to the disfiguration of Bibi Aisha, an 18 year old Afghani woman featured on the cover of Time magazine in 2010 who, on orders of the Taliban, had her nose and ears removed as punishment for leaving her abusive in-laws. This photoshoot depicting nude women with their faces hidden is an inversion of Taliban-enforced dress codes for women in Afghanistan. Ironically, faceless nudes or nudes without identities in turn draws upon Western depictions of women.
